Traveling around Australia in their 78 Series Troopcarrier, surfing, fishing and playing House Concerts.
We caught up with musicians/songwriters Mike and Soph McCarthy from the Central Coast NSW, as they were about to embark on an epic tour called 'SO MUCH SEA' around Australia for the whole of 2015. Here's what Mike had to say:
After returning from playing the Greenroom Festival in Japan 2014 we began planning our big lap of Australia. We bought a 78 Series Troopcarrier as they seem to be the most reliable 4WD on the market here. It's a 2000 model and was in great condition when we bought it. I owned a 1978 Land Rover Series 1 (Stage 2) before this vehicle and loved it dearly but he was an expensive project I could afford no longer.
We are both hoping to write new music, paint and photograph on this trip. After being in the music world for 15 years i really feel like this will be such a refreshing time creatively. I've felt like hitting 'reset' many times over the past few years so this is a great chance to take time out to 'breathe'.
We will still play some shows as we go but it won't be our main focus. I really love the House Concert setup where your fans have you play at their home with their friends in attendance. For us, it's 'our' kind of crowd, like minded folk who help spread our music organically. They invite twenty or so people, make dinner and we play a couple of sets for them. We're looking forward to these shows in so many different parts of the country.
So we leave Wednesday the 28th January, head down the South Coast NSW, camping and playing one house concert at Gerringong (9th Feb). Then up into the Victorian Highlands for some hiking and 4WD challenges en route to the ferry to Tasmania.
We are spending a month in 'Tassie' playing gigs in Hobart (The Republic Bar 8th April), Launceston and St Helens (Crossroads Winebar 5th April) before driving through the middle of NSW and back up to the North Coast and Queensland coast for winter. We will be playing shows in Byron Bay, The Gold Coast and Noosa (at Tom Wegeners house!) and we LOVE this part of Australia so it will be hard to move on from there.
Next stop will be Darwin and then the Kimberleys then North West WA for some big clean reef breaks and Crays on the fire. From here we will make our way back around South Australia, onto the Great Ocean Road and then back home.
That's our vague little plan.
